Confessions of a Clumsy Scot

I'm from Scotland, and I'm pretty clumsy. Go figure!

  • So the whole point of the blog and Instagram initially was showing my wee garden and home so thought I’d do a wee post on how I got here.

We do love a conspiracy theory, what you believe or not is up to you but I don’t enjoy having to eat and enjoy things that are regulated by people who don’t really care about us.

I have quite a big garden, and having enjoyed being in the garden with my granny while growing up I thought I’d try and utilise the space I have.

Now I’m very much a beginner so I’m just doing trial and error and this will take a very long time. But my thought process is if I can make what I’m putting into my body and environment, even 1% better then I’m going to do it.

This year I tried a couple of different fruits and veggies to see what I can do well or what I need to work on. Those were carrots, Broccoli,  Spinach, Strawberries, Tomatoes and Chilli’s.

All of them grew to my amazement, however I wasn’t on the ball enough and I lost my Broccoli and Spinach. The tomatoes grew very leggy so I learnt I need to give them more room to grow, stake them earlier and to give them more nutrients to fruit. I only started my Chilli’s in October inside and they’re growing nicely so hopefully come spring they’ll be established and ready to fruit.

I’m ready to expand for next season, and I need to manage my time better so I can’t wait in terms of growing my own foods!

I’m also cutting down on chemicals. If I don’t need it, I don’t use it and I’m always on the hunt for more natural ways to clean/wash etc. I’ve stopped burning candles and I’m on the lookout for some natural ones instead.

We don’t use central heating anymore (we actually ran out of kerosene and never bothered to buy more) and I adore using our wee stove. It heats our living room and kitchen where we spend most of our time and we both find having a colder bedroom is a lot more refreshing too. It also means if there is a power cut, we still have heat, means to cook/boil water and a little bit of light.

I’ve cut right back on the meat I buy from supermarkets. I generally only buy chicken now (there’s unfortunately nowhere locally to buy fresh). I love being able to support local farmers and crofters by buying their meat and its far better for our bodies and environment, as well as directly supporting farming and local businesses.

This is just the changes I’ve made so far, and I can’t wait to continue this journey. One day I’ll hopefully even have some chickens too!

  • A book that made me cry.

Honestly I don’t know if I’ve ever cried over a book, however I’ve been close a few times.

The one I’ve picked for this is Dave Grohls autobiography, The storyteller.

I loved Dave Grohl before, but after reading his book it really gave me a new understanding and appreciation for him and his life and the struggles he went through and how he overcame it all, and for his biggest achievement in life was his kids and watching them grow up to be amazing human beings!

  • The December Book challenge Day 9, a book of short stories.

So my theory behind this is a little different and this is actually a book I have not read. But hear me out.

I bought this book for a friend.

A few months ago, a friend, Sam, had a pretty serious car accident and spent almost three months in hospital. I happened to be passing and I decided to go and pay him a little visit.

Sams job is actually a storyteller. He has an amazing page called Snooze with Sam (I will leave his links below). He creates wonderful stories that allow your mind to drift into the story. Maybe you struggle to fall asleep? Or maybe you just need to relax your mind. Sam’s stories are for you!

During his time in hospital, it did mean Sam was unable to work, or create these amazing stories.

When I went shopping to get him a little gift, I saw this book and it just reminded me of him so I had to get it for him. Growing up I adored Roald Dahl and I just hope Sam got a laugh out of this wonderful little book just like I did when I saw it.

Thankfully Sam is back home now and back to creating amazing stories at his own pace, although he’s got a long way to go before his life can be normal again so if you fancy a listen or want to support this amazing creator, here is where you can find him!

  • Day 8, a book I was assigned in school!

This was a happy memory from school, my English classes were one of my favourites. And we were assigned so many books ranging from fictional stories to dramas and plays.

The one I’ve chosen is Children of Men by P.D. James. It’s a fabulous book that just draws you right in! The story line is immense, and after we were shown the movie and the whole thing just struck a chord with me and I then went on to write an essay about the story!

Definitely going to have to re-read this one!

  • December Book Challenge Day 7 being a book from my favourite genre!

This obviously had to be a biography! I’ve written before about this being my favourite genre. I love getting to know people, hearing their stories and knowing about their lives!

I’ve picked The sound of laughter written by Peter Kay.

I actually picked this book up on a book swap on holiday in Cuba when I was 10. I read that book three times over that summer and laughed hysterically each time. He’s definitely one of the countries favourite comedians for a reason and how I’d adore to see him live! Maybe one day!

  • The December Book Challenge Day 6 being a book I couldn’t finish!

I’ve picked, The Winters, written by Lisa Gabrielle.

I got this book on a deal from Waterstones. It for some reason caught my eye, even though it’s a type I wouldn’t normally go for. And unfortunately for that reason, I just couldn’t get into it and couldn’t finish it. Its still a good book, but unless I can get drawn into it, I won’t finish it. Which hasn’t happened much though so it’s only one of a handful that I couldn’t get into!

  • A book that was published in the decade I was born. A good few selections here being that I was born in 2000.

I’ve decided to go with The Hunger Games.

Now I’ve only read the first if the trilogy but I adored it. The next two are definitely still on my list but so are about a thousand books!

I think Catching Fire is just so well written and really draws the reader in and just has a fantastic story line!

  • A childhood favourite book.

There was so many that I had to pick from here but I decided to go with the Fairy Magic books. I believe there were around a hundred books in the collection but they’re so well done for a kids collection and I just love how magical and happy they were. I could read them now again too!

I had the petal fairies collection and I read them every single night when I was probably around seven or eight, pretending to be asleep whenever my mum or dad popped their head in.

  • A book with a colour in the title. My pick for this is also a book I first read in High School that really caught my attention.

It’s called Small Blue Thing, written by S. C. Ransom. It’s the first in a trilogy of three books and again I believe it’s aimed at teenagers but I found it really drew me in. It really painted a picture that you could see throughout.

A girl in London finding a gorgeous blue bangle in the Thames that would literally change her life. It takes twists and turns and I’ve read the books so many times over.

I’ll definitely be on the hunt for my book when I visit my parents house again so I can have another read. I only own the first but I think I’ll have to buy the other two to reminisce a little bit about my reads from High School.

  • So Day two of the book challenge is a book that I’ve read multiple times – The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks.

Now this is a book I first read in High School. I’m not sure why, but there’s something I love about this book I love. It’s a pretty dark storyline and probably written for teenagers but I think there’s little things in the book that just really grab your attention.

I also think there’s a bit of a dealing with depression within the storyline and how people from different walks of life deal with it within the same circumstance. But also it was my first realisation of being watched by ‘big brother.’

It’s not a hard or long read but I’d definitely recommend a wee read.

    I’d rate 7/10
